FAQs

What is the difference between peripheral vascular disease and venous disease?

Peripheral vascular disease or PVD includes both diseases of the arteries AND veins. Since arterial disease is more life-threatening, PVD has become synonymous with arterial disease and gets more attention in the medical community. While venous disease is often not life threatening, it can significantly reduce one’s quality of life.

Are varicose veins just a cosmetic problem?

No. Varicose veins are a sign of an underlying vein condition known as chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). CVI is a condition that also leads to leg heaviness/fatigue, restless legs, cramping, itching, spider and varicose veins, skin discoloration, numbness/tingling (i.e. neuropathy), and venous ulcers.

Is chronic pelvic pain caused by venous disease?

Chronic pelvic pain (CPP) can be caused by many conditions including endometriosis, uterine fibroids, and pelvic inflammatory disease. Pelvic venous insufficiency (PVI) which is often overlooked is a venous cause of CPP.
